Breastfeeding Support

We are proud to have a partnership with the Springfield/Greene County WIC (Women, Infants & Children) Lactation Center located at 290 E. Central.  Center hours are Monday-Thursday 7:30am-7:00pm and Friday 7:30am-5:00pm.  Phone 417-864-1324.  24 hour hotline 417-838-9992.

  • The goals of the Doula Foundation of Mid-America (DFMA) mirror those of the American Academy of Pediatrics who regard human milk as the “preferred feeding for all infants, including premature and sick newborns, with rare exceptions”.  The AAP then identifies breastfeeding as the ideal method of feeding and nurturing infants and recognizes breastfeeding as primary in achieving optimal growth and development.

  • Epidemiological research provides strong evidence that human milk decreases the incidence and/or severity of diarrhea, lower respiratory infection, ear infection, bacteremia, bacterial meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and urinary tract infections.

  • A number of studies show protective benefits against SIDS, childhood lymphoma, allergic diseases and diabetes mellitus.

  • Research has also described a positive impact on cognitive development.

  • Currently, DFMA statistics show that women with the support of a doula have a 28% higher breastfeeding initiation rate than the state average.

Another resource for area mothers who are breastfeeding is the new St. John’s Mother & Baby Support Center located at 3328 S. National.  Phone 417-820-2614.
