Testimonials:
We had no doula for our first baby; my husband was skeptical about having one for our second; as soon as I learned I was pregnant for a third time, time he wanted to make sure we had a doula again.
During my first birth, without a doula, I required surgical intervention and the baby had to be in I.C.U. I had a doula during the birth of my second baby it was wonderful! I felt calm and supported. I know it made a difference for both me and my baby!
I had always been resistant to breast feeding but now I love it .
The prenatal yoga classes were a 'life-saver' for stress relief.
When my friends ask me what a doula is, I tell them a birthing coach. But a doula is so much more!
The doula’s presence gave me assurance and support. She was an invaluable member of my birthing team.
I am eternally grateful to the Doula Foundation for helping me provide my son with the perfect entrance into this world. I will always look back at the year and a half that we were involved in the prenatal and postpartum programs and know that every minute was a beautiful investment in the beginning of my child's path in life. These women will always hold a special, thankful, place in my heart.
In my experience working as a Labor and Delivery nurse, I have found Doulas to be a beneficial team member in the birth process for both the patient and their loved ones. Doulas are able to offer the patient even more personalized care throughout this monumental experience.

The goals of the Doula Foundation of Mid-America (DFMA) mirror those of the American Academy of Pediatrics who regard human milk as the “preferred feeding for all infants, including premature and sick newborns, with rare exceptions”. The AAP then identifies breastfeeding as the ideal method of feeding and nurturing infants and recognizes breastfeeding as primary in achieving optimal growth and development.Â
-
Epidemiological research provides strong evidence that human milk decreases the incidence and/or severity of diarrhea, lower respiratory infection, ear infection, bacteremia, bacterial meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and urinary tract infections.
-
A number of studies show protective benefits against SIDS, childhood lymphoma, allergic diseases and diabetes mellitus.
-
Research has also described a positive impact on cognitive development.
-
Currently, DFMA statistics show that women with the support of a doula have a 28% higher breastfeeding initiation rate than the state average. Â
Another resource for area mothers who are breastfeeding is the new St. John’s Mother & Baby Support Center located at 3328 S. National. Phone 417-820-2614.
